A Mother's Lament

Recommended Posts

Barb Knuckles

Bone of our bones, flesh of our flesh:

Once a tiny heartbeat, a handspan from mine.

Now grown tall, he is far from my home

And far from Yours, as well.

O Father, how can I bear this distance

From You, from me?

You formed his frame in the dark;

Surely you are not blind to our paths.

Are you watching and moving?

Close at hand, pursuing

This wandering son of mine?

Do you care?

Open my eyes to see

Your clandestine work, your love.

Open my heart to trust

That you want him more than I.

Let me live and act in faith

Rather than this bottomless void.

Keep my heart tender

Rather than callused from sorrow and fear.

You do not turn away in contempt;

You are not indifferent to this son.

You are the Father who watches and waits

For all the sons of Adam to come home.

And you are the Father who

Did not steel yourself against loss,

But opened your heart wide

And poured out life and blood…and Son.

We, mothers and sons,

Are precious to you.

You are not silent, nor are you distant;

You hold us in your hands.

@Barb Knuckles You have put words to the cries of my heart. Thank you doesn't seem sufficient, but thank you nonetheless. I will be printing this and saving in my journal. I will pray for your son and mine.

In faith,

Renee

“You are the Father who watches and waits

For all the sons of Adam to come home.“

Gosh, Barb. The last 2 lines of each stanza feel to me like an exhalation . . . I’ve used a phrase a lot lately in prayer . . . “help me collapse into your care.” These lines feel like that exhalation, that collapse. (i’ll be asking for your permission to share this with someone we have in common. Thank you for writing it. Beautiful..)

Such faith! to trust when love's path is hidden.

I pray to have this expectancy too.

Luke 7:12-15

As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.
